Google Sitelinks Update

A few months ago I wrote about Google Sitelinks. Sitelinks are additional links Google sometimes generates from site contents in order to help users navigate your site. Sitelinks are generated dynamically, and can change from time to time.

Well, I’ve got some good news. Google has made an update to help you manage your websites Sitelinks. Before we had no way to control which links were chosen as Sitelinks. I logged into my Webmaster Tools account today and noticed along with my Sitelinks being listed, there is also a new option that allows me to block links from being Sitelinks. That’s pretty cool in case a link is picked up that you don’t want to be displayed in your websites Sitelinks.

Download a Free Fishing Web Template

For this Labor Day Weekend my family and I are going fishing at Pickwick Lake so I decided to make a fishing themed free web template.

This web template comes with just one page but you can make as many additional content pages as you need. The template can be for a personal or business website but I think I had a business in mind when I was designing it. The navigation contains both button links and text links. The home page has a nice photo that I took a few years ago of the Mississippi River.

I added a stock photo object on top of that with a guy fishing in a boat because I thought it looked nice. I’ve included some general instructions on the homepage of how to edit the template. Really you just add your site name on the logo graphic, add your page names on the buttons and text links area and finally add your website’s content. Easy!

If you’d like to use this free fishing themed website template in your websites design, you can download it from here:

Here’s a preview of what the template looks like:

I always appreciate a link back if you use the template.

Labor Day Greeting Cards

Labor Day is coming up this weekend so I made 9 new Happy Labor Day Printable greeting cards. The free greeting cards have all sorts of vector illustrations that involve relaxing and lounging around with family and friends, which is what Labor Day is all about.  All of the greeting card headers read, “Happy Labor Day”.  Take a look at them here:

http://www.hooverwebdesign.com/free-printables/labor-day-greeting-cards.html

The greeting cards are quarter fold greetings, meaning you fold an 8 1/2 sheet of paper in half and then fold it in half again to create a single greeting card. The inside of the greeting card is blank and you can write whatever you like there.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Beginner to Website Design? Try a Web Site Builder.

Are you tired of waiting on your web designer to make changes to your website for you? Do you wish you could make the changes to your website yourself? If you can answer yes to any of those questions, have you considered using a web site builder?

If you want to design and maintain your own website but lack the skills and website development software, a web site builder is a great choice.  A web site builder is offered by a number of Internet vendors and allows someone who has no experience with website development to create their own website by point and clicking using their web browser.

Web site builder interfaces while are very different, can be similar to using Microsoft Word. Web site Builders can be advanced to very basic. When choosing the right web site builder you’ll need to think about what your goal for a website is.

If you just need a basic website with web pages and images, just about any sitebuilder will work for you. If you need something more advanced like Ecommerce and plan to sell from your website, you’ll need to pick a web site builder that comes with Ecommerce capabilities. As a bonus most web site builders are template based, and you can easily change your stores design and layouts with a click of a mouse. There’s no need to pay a web designer an additional fee to update your store’s design. Best of all most sitebuilders offer a free trial so you can test the sitebuilder out before you commit.

If you are interested, read our reviews for some of the top website builders.

Enjoy!

I ran across a web site today giving away free website icons. They look pretty cool too….very professional.

The graphic images are of arrows, cameras, buttons, credit cards, paypal, folders, computer screens, envelopes, paper, stars, people and more. This set contains 126 graphic icons in all and the icons are various colors like green, blue, black and gray.

These free icons can be used in a number of website projects for a professional touch.  You can download the icons freely from here:

Just scroll down to where it says, “Download The Icons”.

Competitive Ad Filter Not Working?

Have you blocked an advertiser with your Competitive Ad Filter only to see the advertiser is still appearing in the ad spots on your website? A few weeks ago I saw this MFA type junk site appearing on my web site’s pages. No big deal, I went into my competitive ad filter and blocked the url of the website. I knew that it takes about 8 hours for a website to be removed from your website when you block them.

The next day, more than 8 hours later I saw the same ad appearing on my website’s pages. I logged into my Adsense account to make sure that I added the correct url in the Competitive Ad Filter. I looked at the ad again on my website using the Adsense Preview Tool. It had a different display and target url. I added the display url into my filter just like I had added the target url. I’m thinking, “Great, now you have to have two urls to block one advertiser. My competitive filter is full, already maxed out. 200 urls really isn’t enough.”

I looked at my website the ntext day and still the ad appeared. I looked at Adsense help and it said it could take up to 24 hours for an ad to be filtered using the Competitive Ad Filter. I’m not sure when this change was implemented or if I had it wrong, but I waited the 24 hours. Actualy much more than 24 hours and the ad’s still there. I contacted my account strategist about it and he says he also blocked the advertiser on his end. So what’s the deal? I’m waiting to hear back from him.

At this writing, the ad has been blocked for about 3 weeks now but is still on my website. (After the first week the advertiser put the same ad under a new domain, but I blocked that url too.) Why do I care so much? Easy, this site pays about $.04 cents a click. If you are wondering how I know this, it’s because the ad always appears at the top of the ad block and it’s title is written in such a way that it gets clicked. MFA sites always have a way with words. They lure your visitors in only to find more links that beg to be clicked. I’ve had to remove Adsense from a lot of the pages on my website until this advertiser is gone. I’ve filled the ad space with Commission Junction advertisers.

I’m wondering what’s the reason behind not being able to block this advertiser. If you want to prevent an advertiser from advertising on your website you should be able to do so. I hope it’s not anything sinister other than some sort of bug with the competitive ad filter. I’ll update you on the status.

Enjoy!

Google Enhanced 404 Error Page Widget

I logged into Google’s Webmaster Tools today and noticed a new option for Enhanced 404 Error Pages. When a user clicks on a link to a page that’s no longer available on your site, your server returns a 404 (Page Not Found) error. By placing this Google widget on your custom 404 error page it can help users who go to your site and receive a Page Not Found error by:

  • suggesting an alternative page that they might be looking for
  • adding a search box for your site with appropriate search suggestions

This handy little widget also points users to your sitemap so that they can find what they are looking for.

See the widget in action on my website below:

 custom rrror page widget

It’s in an experimental phase now but you should give it a try. All you need to use this widget is to have your own custom 404 error page.

Login to Webmaster Tools, Select Tools, and then Enhance 404 Pages to grab the code. For advanced users you have the ability to change the appearance of your custom 404 widget by using CSS. Maybe in the future they can hook that up with Adsense.

Enjoy!

How to Make Your Own Ebook

If you want to make money online selling your own products is definitely the way to go. But what products? If you have knowledge or a valuable skill, it’s very likely that others would pay money for your knowledge. We all are knowledgeable in some area. What do you think about ebooks? Ebooks can be on any topic and are just like real books except for the fact that they are in digital format. Just about anyone can be an ebook author. The benefits of ebooks are that you can sell the ebook multiple times to many people, share your knowledge with others, and it requires low start up costs.

make your own ebookIf you don’t know how to create an ebook, don’t worry because it’s very easy. First of all, create your document in Microsoft Word or similar Word Processor program (Tip: Google “download open office”. This free program is just like Microsoft Word and has a built in PDF converter.). Be very thorough in your topic and make sure you spell check and use proper grammar. Next you’ll need to export the document to a PDF file. A PDF file is an Adobe Acrobat file.

Exporting the document to a PDF format will preserve your work in the format that you created it in. In addition no one will be able to remove your name and copyright information from the document. Also, your ebook will be able to run on many computer platforms such as Windows, Linux and Apple Macs. PDF995 is an excellent choice of a free PDF converter except that it displays and ad after you create your PDF. I’ve used this tool for years but have recently started using PDFcreator. I like it a lot because it allows you to add keywords and a description to your PDF files.

Just so that you know, an alternative to distributing your ebooks in PDF format is exporting books as EXE files. This is frowned upon because many computer users tend to think of an EXE file is a virus…me included.

Enjoy!
