Blog Comments Moderation Tip

Have you received multiple comments on your blog which are the same? Does it look like the commenter is submitting their comment over and over again? The reason may be that they don’t know your blog is moderated. If your blog is moderated it’s nice to let blog commenters know before they place a comment, that the blog is moderated and their comment will not be posted on your website until you approve it. Here’s how to do it:

Open comments.php from the blog theme that you use. For me, I would open comments.php from blog/wp-content/themes/thoughts-20/comments.php.

Look for the following code:

<h3 id=”respond”>Leave a Reply</h3>

Just below this you can add a message that tells the commenter that the comments are moderated and that it’s not necessary to post more than once. Here’s an example:

<h3 id=”respond”>Leave a Reply</h3>
<p>Note, all comments are moderated. If you do not see your comment, please be patient as the admin has to approve it before it is posted on this website. Spam comments are not posted. Thank you.<br />

Save the file and upload the updated comments.php file to blogs your web server.

You can make up your own text to use and replace Hoover Web Design with your own websites name. While I was in the comments file, I also added the code for the Kontera affiliate program. Adding the Kontera code to this file makes the ads be displayed only on pages where visitors can leave a comment. No ads are displayed on my blogs home page, category pages or archives. I tried to use the Kontera WordPress plug in before but it never worked for me.
